This year I addopted a dog from the SPCA instaed of purchasing a dog because like children their are so many animals that already need homes. Her name is Ava and she is a 5 month old Pitt. I love her already although she can be a handful. She is very playful and affectionate. Even when I first saw her at the shelter, she was just laying down on the blanket just relaxing and watching all the other dogs barking. She had a very calm nature about her which I really liked. So far I was able to successfully get her used to the leash because for some reason she had some kind of complex or fear about the leash. I dont really know her whole history or background because ofcourse the SPCA's only concern is to get them addopted so they are going to leave out certain information. My aunt thinks that maybe someone was trying to train her on the leash and they hurt her so she was afraid of it. I guess she had to learng to trust me before she decided to go on the leash. Glad that part is over. Oh yea her whining and crying was a little obsessive as well. At first I thought she had a severe case of seperation anxiety but it turns out that all she really needed was to get used to me. She still whines off and on but she doenst get dramatic like she did when I first addopted her. Im really glad too because I want her to increase her confidence because their are going to be times where I am not going to be around. Glad that part is over too. Im still having a problem with the potty training her because she is so used to going in the house that she is not yet used to going outside. I guess the cold weather may have something to do with it too being that she was never walked when she was living in the shelter. I guess the only problem I am having now is her potty training and her nipping. She is starting to teeth or nip a lot so I am trying to get her to stop doing that. I called the vet and they told me that she might be teething which would explain why I found one of her baby teeth on the floor. I was like what the Hell is this? I did have a few problems when i first addopted her though.
1st: it turns out that the lady in the adoption shelter forgot to give her flea or tick medicine. I woke up one morning and I had little bumps underneath my skin. I was so freaked out I called the vet and SPCA. The lady was like "oohh I think we forgot to give her the flea medicine" Im like "how the hell can you forget something like that? now I have little bumps on my fingers. I brought her back in and they gave her a flea dip and gave her some kind of pill that gets rid of fleas.
2nd: She end up getting Bronchitis and an infection. She probably was sick when I addopted her because after awhile she starte sneezing and coughing alot. I called they vet and they told me to give her benadryll and get a humidifyer. I think it was too late by the time i called the vet because it turned into an infection and I had to take her in to get checked. They told me that she had and infection and they gave me antibiotics for her. So far she is doing really well on the anitbiotics. I still have to purchase a humidifyer.
3rd: well I guess I already talked about the whining, leash, potty training, and nipping so I guess thats it.
I guess it all takes patience which I am learning to obtain. So far what I did accomplish with her is she knows the word NO. She also knows how to play fetch. When I walk her, If i stop for a second, she sits and waits for me. I'm glad that she has learned something so far. The journey continues........
